Is it cheaper to hire trades and contractors from Vancouver for Whistler projects?
We finally answer the classic question!
We are often asked by clients to bring trades from Vancouver to Whistler. Clients believe that the cost of construction will be cheaper than hiring local trades. After many requests we decided to prove to them that it is not necessarily the case.
With our most recent project we checked the price of asbestos abatement. It was the local trades versus Vancouver and the results might surprise you.
Before we just give away the results here are some factors to consider. Travel costs time and money. Vancouver companies need to travel everyday to Whistler, or pay accommodation fees for their employees to stay during a project. Affordable accommodation in Whistler is in short supply. Highway geography, travel time, fuel prices and the use of company vehicles, these all add to the cost of construction. With respect to citizens’ environmental concerns such additional costs are unnecessary.
In our asbestos abatement example we secured three quotes, two from Vancouver and one from Whistler. One quote from Vancouver was the same as the Whistler quote. The second Vancouver quote was $10,000 more.
All companies dispose waste responsibly, use industry appropriate practices and safety measures, and offer the same quality of work.
Generally, the hourly rates charged by the various trades are the same whether it be the lower mainland or Whistler. Local trades are usually better informed about the local nuances of the building code and local rules. Given these results, why not support a local company with highly skilled professionals while also protecting the environment?!
